An artist at an art fair in Miami has caused consternation by taking a work by a colleague off the wall and eating it. It is an overripe banana that was stuck to the wall with duct tape.
The banana artwork Comedian is by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. He made more than the banana that was exhibited at the fair. This week three were auctioned, for amounts between $120,000 and $150,000 each.
Fellow artist David Datuna walked at the fair yesterday afternoon, picked up the duct tape around the banana and nibbled at it. Other visitors reacted in amazement and took pictures of the scene. Security guards took Datuna with them.
The American performance artist came up with the idea out of admiration for Cattelan’s work, he claims. “I love Maurizio Cattelan’s works of art and I really love this installation. It’s very good,” he writes about Instagram, where he made a film of his action. He christened his action Hungry Artist.
The organisation of the art fair replaced the banana with a new one within minutes. The gallery owner is not angry. “We can take a joke,” says a spokesman. Therefore, no steps are being taken against Datuna.
The maker Cattelan has not yet responded to the issue. The Italian himself is also known for his provocative work. Earlier this year a solid gold toilet made by him was in the news when it was stolen from a palace in England.
